Tales from a Bucket List Champ

Teach for America Nearly Killed Me

Episode Summary

In the Season 1 Finale, Kiki and Amy conclude their discussion on three years of Teach for America service, which branches out beyond the classroom bubble to generational PTSD stemming from America's original sin of slavery, to a class trip to Washington DC with many kids who'd never been out of Halifax County much less the state, to homophobia and violence.....ending in a bloody mess and tough decisions.

Episode Notes

Note from Kiki: The Kid, as we decided to call him—a bit of an anti-hero—not only made it to 22 without injury or prison, he's now 40 years old with a beautiful wife and family. It's my honor to still be in touch with this inspiring young man who taught me more than I taught him.

Here's what people are saying:

“Amazing podcast. Thanks for sharing your story. You are an inspiration for many. So excited for Season 2.” — Beth R.

"Whoa! Once again—so brave of you to share such personal stories and this traumatic incident... When I play back in my head the podcast, I don't experience the replay in audio, I remember it as if had been a visual movie... My reaction was, 'Wait, what? What do you mean that's the end of the Season!?... When is Season 2 to learn more?' So presuming a goal of a podcast is leaving people wanting to go to a second season, then Success!" — Bonnie M.
